The letter, part by part
Simon Ruiz (Structural Engineer, Commercial and Residential Buildings) is applying to be a Senior Structural Engineer at Yarra Bend Structures. Here is what each paragraph does.

Dear Ms Okafor,
Two years ago I stood in the atrium of your Collingwood library project and wondered how the cantilevered reading room had been detailed so cleanly. That curiosity has stayed with me, so I was delighted to see Yarra Bend Structures advertising for a Senior Structural Engineer. I would like to bring six years of design and site experience to a practice that clearly values elegant, buildable engineering.
At my current consultancy I have led the structural design of eleven mid-rise residential and commercial buildings, the largest a 14-storey post-tensioned concrete tower. On that project, value-engineering the transfer slab saved the builder around A$420,000 and three weeks of programme. I also introduced a peer-review checklist that reduced design RFIs from site by roughly 30% across my team's projects last year.
I understand you are expanding into mass timber and adaptive reuse, two areas where I have growing experience. I design confidently to AS 3600, AS 4100 and AS 1720.1, and use ETABS, RAM Concept and Revit daily. Just as importantly, I mentor two graduate engineers, and I enjoy coordinating with architects early so that the structure supports the design intent rather than fighting it.
I would value the opportunity to talk through recent projects with you and learn more about your plans for the coming year. I hold current RPEV registration and can provide drawings and calculations from past work on request. Thank you for your time and consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Simon Ruiz
Skills to mention
Employers hiring a structural engineer often look for these. Name the ones you really have, with an example.
Phrases you can borrow
Change the details to your own, then copy them into your letter.
I look for the simplest load path that respects the architecture and can be built safely on site.
I enjoy the moment on site when a well-coordinated detail goes together exactly as drawn.
Early conversations with architects have saved my projects more money than any late redesign ever has.
I check my own work as if someone else's name were on the drawing.
Tips for a structural engineer cover letter
- State the building types, heights and materials you have designed, since scale signals your level of responsibility.
- Name the design codes and standards you work to, matched to the country of the role.
- Quantify value engineering in cost or programme time saved for the builder or client.
- For senior roles, mention mentoring, checking or leading graduate engineers.
- Confirm professional registration or chartership status clearly, as it is often a legal requirement.
Mistakes to avoid
- Listing software without describing the structures you actually designed with it.
- Omitting registration status for a role that requires a registered engineer.
- Focusing only on calculations and ignoring coordination, site support and communication.
