Diego Wagner (Quality Engineer, Automotive Components) is applying to be a Senior Quality Engineer at Pennine Precision Medical Ltd. Here is what each paragraph does.

Dear Hiring Manager,
Medical device quality is unforgiving, and that is precisely why the Senior Quality Engineer role at Pennine Precision Medical appeals to me. After five years strengthening quality systems in automotive manufacturing, I want to apply that discipline where the stakes for patients are higher still, within a business known for investing in both its people and its processes.
In my current role at a Tier 1 automotive supplier in Trafford Park, I reduced customer PPM from 85 to 22 in eighteen months by leading structured 8D investigations and tightening control plans. I also guided our transition to updated IATF 16949 requirements with zero major non-conformities at audit, and cut supplier-related scrap costs by £140,000 a year through targeted supplier development visits.
Your role requires strong root cause analysis, statistical process control and audit experience under ISO 13485. I use Minitab daily for capability studies and SPC, lead PFMEA workshops with cross-functional teams, and am a certified ISO 9001 lead auditor. I have studied ISO 13485 and UK MDR documentation requirements in detail, and I am confident my rigour will transfer quickly.
I would welcome an interview to discuss how I could support your quality team as you scale production. I am based in Manchester, can attend at short notice, and would be happy to walk you through a recent 8D report in detail. Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind regards,
Diego Wagner
Skills to mention
Employers hiring a quality engineer often look for these. Name the ones you really have, with an example.
Phrases you can borrow
Change the details to your own, then copy them into your letter.
I treat every customer complaint as data that can prevent the next one.
I prefer fixing the process that allowed a defect over simply containing the defect itself.
I work closely with production teams so quality is built in rather than inspected in.
I am comfortable defending a corrective action plan in front of an external auditor.
Tips for a quality engineer cover letter
- Use the metrics quality teams track, such as PPM, scrap cost, first-pass yield or audit findings.
- Name the standards you have worked under, such as ISO 9001, IATF 16949 or ISO 13485.
- Describe a root cause method you use, like 8D or 5 Whys, with a real outcome.
- If changing sector, acknowledge any gap in standards honestly and show what you have done to close it.
- Mention audit experience on both sides, internal and external or supplier audits.
Mistakes to avoid
- Listing quality standards without showing any improvement you achieved under them.
- Presenting quality as policing production rather than partnering with it.
- Claiming regulated-industry experience you do not have when changing sector.
